TICKFORD RACING – SYDNEY SUPERNIGHT FRIDAY REPORT

With all three of its Ford Mustangs in the top 10 of both practice sessions on Friday at the Sydney SuperNight, Tickford Racing has made a positive start to the final of four consecutive weekends at Sydney Motorsport Park.
The day’s action started with a session exclusively for additional drivers, where Tickford’s co-driver group for December’s Bathurst 1000 took to the track. Setting nearly identical fast lap times, James Moffat (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang), Zak Best (No. 5 Truck Assist Ford Mustang), and Thomas Randle (No. 44 Boost Mobile Ford Mustang) placed fifth, sixth, and seventh in the session before handing over to their primary drivers for Practice 1 under the lights in Sydney.
Continuing his solid form in Sydney, Jack Le Brocq (No. 5 Truck Assist Ford Mustang) led the Tickford trio in the night session with the fourth fastest lap of the session, with Cam Waters (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang) close behind in fifth. James Courtney (No. 44 Boost Mobile Ford Mustang) also found his way into the top 10 by the end of Practice 1, turning in the eighth fastest lap of the session.
Supercars action resumes Saturday with Practice 2 at 11:50 a.m. AEDT ahead of Race 29 qualifying at 1:40 p.m. A Top Ten Shootout at 4:35 p.m. will finalise the grid for Race 29, a 250-kilometre race scheduled to start at 7:10 p.m.

“It’s a solid start to the weekend for us. Zak did a good job this afternoon in the co-driver session getting his feet wet, and to end up fourth tonight is pretty nice. Obviously it’s just practice but it’s a nice little confidence boost heading into tomorrow, we’ll try and tune her up overnight and hopefully go a bit better tomorrow. It’s a long day and a long race but I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

“It was a pretty good day, a long day to be in the car for just one session, but it was good to get Moff some laps in the car ahead of Bathurst. Then tonight we just kept chipping away at the car set up, trying a lot of different things and seeing what we can learn. To be fifth in both sessions is pretty good and we have made some progress on the car, but it’s too early to say we’re in the window. We’ll figure that out pretty quickly tomorrow, but until then we’ll look over the data tonight and make some positive changes for tomorrow.”

“Today wasn’t too bad for us, I got the afternoon off and we gave Tommy (Randle) the reigns for the first session and he did pretty well, then in the night session we struggled initially to get the car to work how we wanted it. That first run wasn’t anywhere near where we needed it, but we came in, made some changes, got back out there and the balance was a fair bit nicer. It’s only practice obviously so you take it with a pinch of salt, but it’s a nice start to our weekend. It’s been a hard few weeks for us and the team so we’re laser focused on having a good weekend here, like I said it’s a nice start but we’ll need to continue improving tomorrow.”

“It’s a start, three cars in the 10 in both sessions looks nice but at the same time we know practice doesn’t always tell the story. We know there’s room for improvement so while the numbers look solid today we’re not resting at all. Tomorrow’s a big day especially with the longer race, so we’ll keep tuning the cars and look to improve further across the weekend.”
DUNLOP SUPER2 SERIES
Driving in his first Dunlop Super2 Series session since he won on the streets of Townsville in July, Zak Best (No. 78 Best Leisure Industries Ford Falcon FG X) combined his co-driver session hit out with two practice sessions in the No. 78 Ford Falcon FG X on Friday. After posting the 13th quickest lap of Practice 1, the 20-year old found more than two seconds in Practice 2’s more favourable conditions, ultimately finishing the session in seventh.
The Dunlop Super2 Series returns to track on Saturday at 3:05 p.m. AEDT for Race 7 qualifying, ahead of the 18-lap Race 7 beginning at 6:00 p.m.

“It was a big day today, I had 100 minutes of session time between Super2 and the co-driver session, I turned a lot of laps and we learned a lot, and to get out there with the other co-drivers in a proper session was pretty cool. On the Super2 side first practice didn’t go too great, we struggled for pace a bit but we found some time in Practice 2 which was nice. We still have some ground to gain but we’ll keep working at it into Saturday and try to qualify in the first couple of rows.”
