Tickford starts second half in Tailem Bend

TICKFORD RACING – THE BEND SUPERSPRINT PREVIEW
27 July, 2022
Returning to South Australia, Tickford Racing is up to continue its on-track form at this weekend’s OTR SuperSprint at The Bend Motorsport Park, the eighth event of the 2022 Supercars Championship. Tickford heads to The Bend riding momentum following a strong finish to the NTI Townsville 500 where Cam Waters (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang) and James Courtney (No. 5 Snowy River Caravans Ford Mustang) finished third and fourth in Race 20 earlier this month.

Waters now sits third in the Supercars drivers’ championship after scoring a pair of third place finishes in Townsville, and has stood on the rostrum in eight of the last 11 races outright. The 27-year old is also in form at Tailem Bend, having picked up a win in each of the previous two seasons at the venue.

Courtney’s dramatic turnaround in Townsville saw him regain momentum after an up-and-down run in recent races, and the former champion now sits 11th in the standings. Having a better feeling for his car, and heading to Tailem Bend where he has shown speed in recent years, Courtney is confident he can continue that strong speed this weekend.

Thomas Randle (No.55 Castrol Racing Ford Mustang) made his first career Top Ten Shootout appearance in Townsville, a positive sign as the rookie continues to gel with his Castrol Racing Mustang and crew. Randle is optimistic about the coming event, having impressed in 2019 and 2021 wildcard outings, and cited a recent rookie test at The Bend as useful preparation for this weekend’s event.

Aiming to rebound from a difficult Townsville event, Jake Kostecki (No. 56 Tradie Ford Mustang) is looking forward to getting back on track this weekend, where Tickford has performed well in recent years.

Re-joining the team’s main game roster this weekend is Zak Best (No. 78 Tickford Racing Ford Mustang), making his second appearance of the season as a wildcard entry. Although it is his first Supercars event at the South Australian circuit, Best has had success at the venue in the past, taking a race win in 2019 when competing in the Super3 series.

The OTR SuperSprint hosts Races 21, 22, and 23 of the 2022 Supercars Championship this weekend at The Bend Motorsport Park. Supercars action begins Saturday with practice, knockout qualifying, and Race 21, and is followed by qualifying and Races 22 and 23 on Sunday.

DRIVERS’ VIEW

James Courtney

“It was encouraging to finish Townsville the way we did, we really struggled on the Saturday but made some good changes overnight and we were much stronger on Sunday, getting fourth was great for our confidence and hopefully we can carry that into this weekend. We’ve been pretty competitive at The Bend the last couple years, obviously Cam’s picked up a couple race wins and our cars have generally been strong there, so we’re looking forward to getting out there and trying to bring home some more good results for the team.”

No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang
Cam Waters

“We’ve been pretty strong at The Bend the last couple of years, so I’m definitely excited to be heading back there this weekend. I think we’re heading in a good direction as a team, my car’s been running at the front the last few rounds which has been awesome, but the other guys have had good runs as well and having JC right with me in Townsville was really good for team points. We’re making good progress with the cars and feel we can continue to be competitive, so I’m looking forward to the weekend.”

“It’s good to be headed back to Tailem Bend, it has a pretty special place in my career having made my Supercars debut there in 2019, and racing there last year was a lot of fun, we picked up some really good results so hopefully we can do more of that again this weekend. We had a rookie test at The Bend not long ago which was really productive and helped us get a better idea for what we need out of our car, and we’ll certainly try and put that to use this weekend. It’s been a tough few rounds for us in terms of results but we’ve shown flashes of really good pace everywhere, so I’m really looking to put together a complete weekend, and I think this weekend is a great opportunity to do that.”

Jake Kostecki

“It’s great to be getting back on track this weekend in Tailem Bend. I think we made some really good steps with our car over the last few rounds but unfortunately we didn’t get to really show it in Townsville, so I’m keen to see what we can do this time out. The team’s had a pretty good record at The Bend the last few years, so I think we’ll be in a good position to roll out well and have a strong weekend. It’s a pretty fast track and can be tough to pass, so hopefully we can qualify up front and make our lives easier trying to get some more top 10s and good points.”

No. 78 Best Leisure Industries Ford Mustang
Zak Best

“I’m really looking forward to this weekend and having another crack in the main game. Darwin was pretty tough but it was a great learning experience and I’m keen to put everything I learned to use this weekend. It’s good to have one event under my belt and the team to have one as well, so I think we can be a lot more competitive this weekend and hopefully have a clean, solid run.”

Tim Edwards, Team Principal
“The Bend has been a happy hunting ground for us in recent years, so we’re looking forward to heading back there. Cam has had a couple wins, of course, but all of our cars have generally been up the pointy end there, we’ll definitely look to continue that this weekend.  We’re looking forward to having Zak back with us as a wildcard as well and see how he gets on. Darwin was a big learning experience but I think that showed him the kind of step up it is from Super2 to Supercars, he’ll be well prepared and hopefully will be one of five Tickford Mustangs to have a strong run this weekend.”
