TICKFORD RACING – THE BEND SUPERSPRINT FRIDAY REPORT

Tickford Racing has ended Friday at The Bend SuperSprint with all five of its Ford Mustangs in the top ten of Virgin Australia Supercars practice. Led by Chaz Mostert (No. 55 Supercheap Auto Ford Mustang) posting the second-quickest lap, all five of the team-operated cars will get a bye from the first round of knockout qualifying on Saturday ahead of Race 21.
Cameron Waters (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang) was close behind Mostert with the third quickest lap of Practice 2, followed by Lee Holdsworth (No. 5 The Bottle-O Ford Mustang) fifth after the latter led the team in Practice 1 with the third quickest lap. Despite admitting his changes in Practice 2 didn’t have the desired effect, Will Davison (No. 23 Milwaukee Racing Ford Mustang) posted the ninth-quickest lap of the session, and will also advance straight to Q2 on Saturday.
Making his main game Supercars debut in a wild card entry, Thomas Randle (No. 66 Scandia Ford Mustang) finished Practice 2 with the tenth quickest time. The 23-year old rookie led the opening session of the day in an additional drivers session, and was fourth in Practice 1, a notable start for the Super2 sophomore.
The first session of the day was an additional drivers session in which Michael Caruso (Car 6), James Moffat (Car 55), Alex Davison (Car 23), and Randle (Car 66) took part, all finishing in the top seven.
Supercars action resumes Saturday with Practice 3 at 10:00 a.m. ACST, followed by Race 21 knockout qualifying at 12:35 p.m., and Race 21 at 3:25.

“It felt like we had an okay balance, but we still need to do plenty of work. It’s always good to finish in the top ten, we finished in the top five today, which was even better, but we’ve got a little bit of work to do for qualifying, I think. But yeah, a good way to start a Friday and start a weekend, I think we can find a bit more speed in The Bottle-O car yet.”

“We had a good day, we made the car better across it, which was nice. Some of the things from the test day worked, which was promising. Still it’s not perfect, obviously there’s one car that’s a chunk faster than us, so we’ll do our homework overnight and try to close that gap.”

“The car was pretty challenging today. I didn’t really think we’d end up where we did at the end of the day, but it’s quite promising to be up there, so now we’ve just got to find a little bit more speed out of the Supercheap Auto Mustang. We’ll get on the case, and see how we go tomorrow.”

“The main objective of the day was to get into the top ten to be through to Q2 in qualifying, so we’ve achieved that. We’ve certainly rolled the cars out with a very competitive base. We made some changes in the second session which were certainly the wrong direction, so I wasn’t entirely happy with my run there at the end, but we fortunately scraped through, so we definitely learned from that. We’re very confident we’ll make the car better, so it’s a good start to the weekend.”

“Unbelievable. I’m still pinching myself to get into the ten first time round. It was something in the back of my mind, but knowing how tough the competition is here. We got out of Practice 1 because we ran a green set of tyres in Practice 1, just because we had an extra set. We knew there’d be a fair bit of work to do because no one else was running a green set. And in Practice 2 everyone was running a green set at the end, it was getting tough, but just managed to get the lap in. Still a million miles from the guy next to me (Scott McLaughlin), but I’m really happy for all the guys, and it’s been a great day. Quickest in the additional driver session, and to end in the ten is fantastic. Straight into Q2, for it to come to fruition is really cool.”

“Well we’ve been patting ourselves on the back for having four cars with top ten speed, so to have five in the ten is excellent. It’s really great for the team, they’ve had a big few weeks since QR, so it’s very promising for us to roll out strong here this weekend. It’s nothing to celebrate yet, and we’ve still got ground to make up to get to the top spot, but it’s been a very positive Friday.”
