TICKFORD RACING – SUPERCHEAP AUTO BATHURST 1000 FRIDAY REPORT

Lee Holdsworth (No. 5 Truck Assist Ford Mustang) has taken provisional pole for the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, after topping qualifying on Friday afternoon at Mount Panorama. Holdsworth, who is paired with co-driver Michael Caruso, posted his fast lap of 2m04.02s with just under nine minutes left in qualifying, and held on to the top spot as rain fell in the waning moments. While it is not an official pole position, Holdsworth will be the last car to run in Saturday’s Top Ten Shootout to determine the starting order of the front five rows for Sunday’s race.
After Will Davison (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang) led the co-driver only session on Friday morning, Cameron Waters posted the fourth fastest lap of Practice 5 and also qualified fourth on Friday afternoon to advance into Saturday’s Shootout.
Also making it into the Shootout was James Courtney (No. 44 Boost Mobile Ford Mustang), who guided the No. 44 Mustang to ninth by the conclusion of qualifying, ensuring he and teenage co-driver Broc Feeney will start near the pointy end of the grid on Sunday.
The rain that fell in the closing minutes of qualifying scuppered Jack Le Brocq’s last efforts at earning a Shootout berth, the 28-year old qualifying 15th for Sunday’s race.
Saturday’s action at Mount Panorama begins with Practice 6 for co-drivers only at 9:10 a.m. AEDT, followed by Practice 7 at 11:35, and the Top Ten Shootout beginning at 5:05 p.m.

“We still have the Shootout tomorrow, but this is my first time on provisional pole at Bathurst, so we’ll soak this one in a bit and try to back it up tomorrow. But I’m just stoked for the team, the guys and girls at Tickford, Truck Assist Racing have been amazing. Sammy (Scaffidi, engineer) has done an awesome job with the car, Carus has been great fun to drive with again, I’m just really enjoying myself, and definitely enjoying it even more when we’re P1, so we’ll see if we can do it again tomorrow.”

“It was a pretty strong day for us, Wilbur obviously started the day off well for us being quickest in the co-driver session, and we just kept working on the race car for most of my session. The car’s quick, we did our best lap on our second run, and waited to go out at the end, then obviously the rain came and that was that. But we made the Shootout which was the main goal, and we have a good, straight car. We’ll tune up some little things tomorrow, then put it on the line when it counts.”

“It was good to make the Shootout, not by much but we’re in and that’s all that matters. The team’s doing a great job, the car overall feels quite good, Broc’s getting good mileage and laps under his belt and driving real maturely, so far so good. We’re chasing some little things and have had some minor hiccups, but we’re happy with the results we’ve had and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

“The day was okay, we worked a bit on our race car this morning, just trying to tune it up a bit, and for qualifying I felt we had a car that could be in the mix for the Shootout . Unfortunately we went out for that last run and the skies opened up at the top of the hill, which was no fun. We’ll start 15th, but the race car feels pretty good, Moff’s driving great, so we’ll keep improving the car tomorrow and look to have a good one on Sunday.”

“We’re over the moon for Lee. It is just provisional pole, but anytime you end the day at Bathurst in P1 is pretty special. He and Carus have been chipping away all week with genuine speed, so even if the conditions did help a bit at the end, the Truck Assist Mustang is very quick. Obviously Cam and Will continued their strong start, and JC did an excellent job to get into the Shootout as the track was going away. Unfortunately the rain kept Jack from having a crack at the end, but we have three bullets in the chamber for tomorrow and four quick race cars for Sunday, which is a good position to be in.”
DUNLOP SUPER2 SERIES
Making his first Supercar race start at Mount Panorama on Friday, Broc Feeney (No. 5 Boost Mobile Ford Falcon FG X) was underwhelmed with a sixth place qualifying result, citing a mistake on his last flying lap. However the 17-year old redeemed himself in Friday’s 16-lap Dunlop Super2 Series race, evading an early incident in front of him to gain a pair of spots, then stalking the third place car ahead to the chequered flag, ultimately taking fourth place in Race 6. The result also moves Feeney into fourth in the Super2 drivers’ championship with one race remaining.
Super2 action continues Saturday with Race 7 qualifying at 1:30 p.m. AEST, and Race 7 at 4:00.

“I made a mistake on my qualifying lap, we should have been around P3, but we fought back through in the race. I had a bit of a messy start again, but got back to P4, I chased down P3 but just couldn’t get the move done. Really happy with our pace in Super2, we’re probably one of the quickest cars out there at the moment. I’ve just got to have a good quali tomorrow, get a good start, and I think we can battle for a win.”
